overcast) and the coffee brewing …

day in July of 2000. I can still smell the carpet and diesel and
oil from Caltrain as I walk into the building at 800 El Camino. …
I’m powering up my BeOS box and PowerBook … then wandering upstairs,
to the third floor, where most of engineering lived, to the kitchen,
pouring coffee out of the pot if it was already there (strong, by
mpr, or weak, by casm) … come to think of it, there’s
nobody here, nobody’s made coffee on the third floor, time to continue
up to 4, where marketing has been working for at least a half hour, and
is likely to have made coffee … back downstairs on 3, walking past the
rows of old, forlorn computers, beige Macs and Hobbit BeBoxes, and
waiting for the rest of the company to wander in …
