The silver lining
Here’s the silver lining. Had Kerry won, he would have picked up the tab for Bush’s broken Pottery Barn merchandise. How could Kerry possibly (i) magically fix Iraq, (ii) magically fix the budget, (iii) magically save Social Security, (iv) magically repair the economy—especially with a hostile Congress? He might have made some thankless headway, but these problems would still exist in 2008 (a testament to the catastrophes that created them), and Kerry would certainly be crushed by any Republican candidate. At least this way, at the end of eight years of Bush rule, we can assign accountability more accurately.
