He was thinking about the selection problem one evening when
he went to dinner at an old beer and hamburger joint in Menlo Park
called the Dutch Goose, the kind of place where decades worth of
initials are carved into the wooden tables. He ordered a beer and looked
around the bar, and noticed a Hamm’s beer sign, where the Hamm’s logo
was encircled by a band of moving lights, whose alternating flashing
pattern projected the illusion of motion, like a movie
marquee.
