Why is it that when us tech-savvy people make slip-ups, they're always
such huge disasters, AND we are so much more hard on ourselves because
we "should have known better"?

I think it’s because we put so much pride and energy in the things we
create technologically. But unlike other creators – writers, artists,
etc. – we ply our craft in the service of others, too, and when shit
goes bad, they get hurt as collateral damage. We feel guilty,
worthless, responsible.

I think the best parallel I can come up with is this: You’re an
architect, and one of your buildings suddenly fails outright, and comes
down on its inhabitants.

(I mean, OK, there are no fatalities here. It’s just a matter of
orders of magnitude, I guess.)
