It occurs to me, while on the topic of the eMac (it’s now available for general
purchase, not just in educational channels), that the CRT is probably a pretty
good deal for Apple. I mean, yes, the CRT makes the machine more resistant to
physical abuse (and harder for kiddies to steal); however, one of the reasons
Sony started work on the eVilla was that they had all this FD Trinitron
manufacturing apparatus in San Diego that was going totally unused. They
figured that a portrait-orientation tube would make a novel internet appliance
(it did) and be cheap enough to sell cheaply (it wasn’t). I wouldn’t be
surprised if Sony (having discontinued the eVilla almost as soon as it was
released, to our consternation) made Apple a
great deal on those same tubes (or, at least, on tubes manufactured at the San
Diego factory).
