Reservations.

January 18th, 2006

I’m mostly happy with my new Netgear WGR614 base station (replacing my dying Linksys), but the “Address Reservation” feature seems totally broken. Not only does it not give my machine the IP address I’ve assigned for my MAC address, but it seems to never want to reuse an IP address at all (giving my PowerBook an increasingly-higher IP every time I reconnect to the network). This makes it really hard to do predictable port forwards. (No, I don’t want to stop using DHCP, because I’d prefer not to muck with my network settings every time I switch networks.) Update: Looks like a new firmware version came out yesterday, so I installed the North American version. Whoops! Now the “region” select box is disabled. (Since they split the firmware into a version for North America and one for elsewhere, I guess some QA flunkie decided that they didn’t need the input box anymore. You can even see the non-disabled version there in the HTML comments of the administration page.) This causes me not to be able to save any settings at all on that config page.

Finally: I tried installing the non-North-America version, which does not have this bug. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to fix the Address Reservation bug, so I’ve since rolled back to the original firmware.
