osx2vnc, and other keyboard-sharing tricks

October 14th, 2004

Just in case any of you were thinking about finding a dead monitor to connect to your computer’s second video port, just to carefully position a VNC client window on it: this has been done in software. The Tao of Mac has a pretty good list of
VNC tools which do this (skip down to “Multi-Machine (a2b)” for the input-sharing tools). Basically, these special VNC clients create an offscreen window (or 1-px-wide window at the edge of the screen; whatever) that captures your mouse events and sends them to the server. These clients don’t fetch the remote display, either, which is a huge bandwidth saver.
