His argument, in a nutshell: &#8220;Link data is Google&#8217;s number one asset. Today they just admitted that asset isn&#8217;t as valuable as it used to be.&#8221;  Bah.  They admitted, instead, that the world has changed, and that <i>A<\/i> <b>links-to<\/b> <i>B<\/i><\/tt> no longer strictly implies <i>A<\/i> <b>endorses<\/b> <i>B<\/i>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Update:<\/b> It seems that there&#8217;s a growing backlash against <tt>nofollow<\/tt>, claiming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kuro5hin.org\/story\/2005\/1\/19\/35627\/2443\">it damages the Web<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freeke.org\/ffg\/tech\/computers\/internet\/dontfollow.html\">PageRank doesn&#8217;t motivate spammers<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cincomsmalltalk.com\/blog\/blogView?showComments=true&#038;entry=3283576564\">+<\/a>) or even that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ideoplex.com\/blog\/2005\/01\/19.html#a1087\">spammers don&#8217;t even bother with HREFs sometimes<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI guess my problem is that I keep viewing spammers as essentially rational (which they are) but I totally misapprehend the <em>utility<\/em> of their various strategies.  (Can you tell I&#8217;m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.rice.edu\/~dsandler\/\">enrolled<\/a> in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.owlnet.rice.edu\/~econ472\/\">game theory course<\/a> this semester?)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Update #2:<\/b> Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.j-bradford-delong.net\/movable_type\/2005-3_archives\/000188.html\">Brad DeLong<\/a>, an even-handed opinion by Chuq Von Rospach: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plaidworks.com\/chuqui\/blog\/001856.html\">Why &#8216;rel=&#8221;nofollow&#8221;&#8216; isn&#8217;t the answer.<\/a> Or is at best only a partial one.???  In essence, not only is it free to comment-spam, but it&#8217;s also highly unlikely that weblog software will be updated to annotate untrusted links appropriately.
