Note to readers who do not enjoy reading about cats: You may safely ignore this post without fear of retribution.

Remember how our neighbors took in that cute stray cat? Well, she’s staying with us for the holidays while they drive up to the frosty white North. They wanted to take Brenda (the cat. please keep up.) with them, but can’t for various excellent reasons. E and I are excited to have her hanging out with us, and (increasingly) so are our cats.

I’ve been emailing little updates to Brenda’s mommy and daddy to let them know how we’re getting on. Here’s the first one:

Amanda got the idea to capture every hour photographically. Naturally I want to follow suit, because, you know, my initial response to anything essentially ephemeral is, “oh, quick, capture it.” I see this take-a-photo-on-the-hour idea “becoming a thing”, as Barney might say.

You may have noticed that we had a cute kitten living in our parking area.

Well, no more. She’s moved in with our cool neighbors!

Over at the Chronicle: Where were you for Burke’s HR?

Certain games, you remember where you were, with whom you were watching, sometimes even what you were drinking or eating. […] Over the years since then, I’ve been fortunate to be in stadiums when memorable moments occurr … so where were you Sunday afternoon? And does this trump all the others in Astros and Houston sports history?

Where was I for the longest playoff game on record? In my apartment, forgetting it was even going on, minding my own business, when I heard our downstairs neighbor through the floor:

“OH HOLY FUCKING SHIT! SHIT SHIT SHIT! OH MY GOD! FUCKING FUCK! SHIT!”

It was at that point that Erin and I looked at each other and wondered if there was some sort of sporting event going on. We turned on the TV in time to see Burke cross the plate. Since we hadn’t been watching for all six hours, we certainly didn’t earn the moment, but it was nice to see it live.

This (MP3) is what we get to listen to, in constant loop, every morning starting at 6 AM. It comes from the house on Truxillo behind our apartment, where the owners keep a big dog in a metal cage outside all day. It’s like living in a pet store! (Specifically, a pet store at the mall that neglects/mistreats its animals.)

I’m with Anya: Bunnies are evil. There’s a dark brown long-eared rabbit that’s been roaming our neighborhood all week; it’s clearly an Easter present that got away—this creature is clearly not a wild animal. We caught it last weekend and handed it off to our next-door neighbors, who agreed to leash the bunny and find its owner, but it’s since been spotted twice in our yard. What’s most distressing is that we’ve just planted a bunch of beautiful new flowers to help give our house a little more “curb appeal”, and it appears that they’re turning into “lunch appeal” for this lagomorphic freeloader instead.

I ran it off with a hose today (Animal Control isn’t open on Sundays).

Hey, just kidding. (By the way, you see the four-car driveway at the far left of the picture? Yeah, they have two cars in the garage too. And at least one of the cul-de-sac cars belongs to them. Awesome!)

Update 10/2005: Entry un-blocked since we don’t live there anymore and aren’t trying to sell our house.
