The recipe said “keep the steaks warm after cooking.” So we placed a casserole on top of an extremely low flame, ready for the meat when it came out of the pan.
A few minutes later we were greeted with an impossibly loud BANG, and several hundred tiny blocks of blue Pyrex™ scattered around the kitchen. The casserole dish had diced itself from the heat.
Our entire kitchen—the floors, countertops, mixing cups—looked a bit like the bottom half-inch of an aquarium, filled with decorative blue glass pellets. (Sorry, no photos of that; we had to clean quickly to avoid spoiling the meal.)
First, two articles from Houstonist, starting with a story we’ve been following here on dsandler.org: Krispy Kreme’s replacement headed down the hole.
At 930 Main St., Jumbles’ downtown location, nobody answers the phone; at the Clear Lake and Missouri City stores, the phones have been disconnected; on Richmond Avenue, there’s a notice taped to the door saying that the locks have been changed because the tenants didn’t pay rent; and the Westheimer store, where all the baking is done for the area, is closed during business hours. What’s more, suppliers to Jumbles — including H. Mills Duncan IV, president of the Duncan Coffee Co. — can’t get anyone at Lone Star to answer their calls.
Next: another CVS coming to Midtown (further contributing to our citywide goal of at least one church, one drugstore, and—in the case of Sugar Land—one taekwando school on every street corner).
This one will be built on the southeast corner of Main and Elgin, right on the MetroRail line and a few blocks from the CVS at Gray and Bagby[…]
Finally, I’ll see you all at 10am on Saturday at the Memorial City Mall, where Apple’s second Houston-area retail store is set to open:
Mac geeks in and around the Houston, TX area have begun receiving the “Come meet your new neighbor” emails which Apple sends out in preparation for a new Apple Store opening. The store located in the Memorial City Mall will hold its grand opening on June 17th at 10AM.
From Apple’s map page it appears the store is located near the food court entrance, on the south side by Penney’s (see also the official Mem City Mall map, which so far lacks a logo.).
Erin and I like to eat. Houston’s a great place for that. When we lived elsewhere, we’d visit Houston and eat our way through the trip. Now that we live here again, we can (and do) eat at our favorite places all the time. Not content to eat at the same places over and over, though1, we occasionally venture out to the odd new eatery. We hit two today: DNR on Montrose, and Earl of Sandwich out in Sugar Land. Here’s what we thought; ratings are on a scale of −2 to +2 (each of us kicks in −1, 0, or 1 point to the total).

Upon reading this WaPo article1 about DC Snacks (a Kozmo-like service for customers living within a mile of the White House), I promptly checked out dcsnacks.com, expecting a q&d student website. It’s actually really slick; well-organized and mouthwatering at every turn. Very professional. (Those K Street types probably won’t order from you if you seem shady. Well, they won’t order food from you.)
1 Actually, this Chronicle version, which doesn’t require registration to read. ↩
I get some of these jokes (the little sushi pallets do look like clogs), but someone who is much more familiar with Japanese custom will have to explain the more subtle points of the Sushi: The Japanese Tradition.

“Taisho always have a secret personal history; you should never ask about this.”
