Double vision.

July 14th, 2007

My PowerBook seems to be cursed. I still haven’t figured out why it switches to the wrong application sometimes (example situation: in iTerm; click on a Safari window; Safari pops to the front, then the Finder immediately pops up in front of everything. WTF?). Now I have a new bug: some of my applications appear to be cloning themselves in the Finder.

The following are screengrabs from my open “Applications” window in the Finder:

The actual .app bundles aren’t duplicated! There’s just one file (confirmed in the filesystem), one inode, etc. But the Finder is showing double icons for a few apps. It even shows triplets for VirtueDesktops:

Huh?

I’ve never seen that one before. Mine has picked up an odd habit of suddenly refusing to save any document, giving me a “bad parameter error (-50)” or some such thing. I haven’t been able to pin it down to any specific time, action, or application. At the moment, my only guess is that it had to do with 10.4.10. Sigh…not going to be fun to wrestle with that come August.
