Boy, it’s been quiet around here, eh?

It’s been a surprisingly busy weekend with Erin in Houston. Not to be left out of the generally-boisterous Thanksgiving experience, I managed to get myself invited to Chris’s family’s (well-attended!) feast, at which I had a great time. Back home, it’s cleaning, hunting for episodes of Changing Rooms to tape, and more run-ins with the Evil Neighbors (it turns out that part of the reason that the heads-of-household are perpetually out of town is that the dad is a United employee … the other part of the reason, of course, being that their fully-grown live-in children are Hellbeastes).

Working on software too. Hope to finish a new screensaver sometime this week. In the meantime, borkware has some handy OS X programming tips as well as another retro screensaver.

[11:23] <hippo> Doom is upon me. My daughter has figured out how to use doorknobs.
Displaced Wednesday series “Fastlane” will move to Friday nights at 8 p.m. starting Jan. 10. The current time slot occupant “Firefly” will go on hiatus. Fox Entertainment President Gail Berman stressed that “Firefly” has not been canceled. New episodes will continue to air throughout December and the network is considering a new time slot for the series. [source]

Speaking of jwz, news from his SF nightclub: “DNA update, in which a tagger is made to be our bitch.”

A serious engineering adventure in LA, involving L-N2, 800 amps, and road construction.

This little mind-blower from TMW: an article from 1997 about the government’s unconstitutional desire to wiretap Internet communications.

The protections of the Fourth Amendment are clear. The right to protection from unlawful searches is an indivisible American value. Two hundred years of court decisions have stood in defense of this fundamental right. The state’s interest in effective crime-fighting should never vitiate the citizens’ Bill of Rights.

Author: Senator John Ashcroft. Weird.

Salon on Trading Spaces: Home decorating, and other lies. “You’ll never see the sewing coordinator who has done all the sewing. You will not hear him tell a homeowner working in front of the camera that she won’t hurt anything because the machine isn’t threaded. You also will not know that some of the scenes that take place on Day 1 actually were shot near the end of Day 2. And you will never know how many retakes it took to get the scene right.”
So, we got new chairs at the office today. [shakes head slowly, at a loss for words]
Mark and his cat ER adventure.

Gems on Slashdot about Ellen Feiss’s interview with the Brown Herald. “She was wearing comfy clothes. Comfy. What could influence an individual to wear comfy clothes but the gentle ministrations of marijuana?” And, hey, I mean, Brown? Come on.

From the interview itself, an elegant Steve slam: “I met Steve Jobs. He called me by my first name — clever, huh? It was brief.”

Don’t have enough to read on the Web? Want some recommendations?
Wow, I didn’t know there was a Palm Cafe. (Not unlike the Apple Store.)

For those of us that don’t watch, a reasonably-detailed (if hard-to-follow) summary of the most recent episode of “Angel”, “Rain of Fire”. Why? Because apparently it’s linked to what’s going on in Buffy right now.

[Cordelia] admits that every time she closes her eyes she sees something terrible, “moving, deep down, clawing its way up.”
Joss Whedon on the current state of Firefly. “[W]e all feel like we’re on Serenity. We’re looking ahead to that next job. We’re still flying. The future’s uncertain, but we’re still flying.”

Salon has a new comics reviewer.
