Wow. I just saw an actual, tangible copy of Mike’s book, Skip Intro. It’s really an accomplishment — the man is a published author now! (The book contains a really nice head-shot of Mike, taken by this guy, who does some really awesome work too.)

The thermostat is at 70° and the thermometer reads 63°. Why doesn’t our heater stay on? “Hey! You in there! I don’t hear you running, bitch! Do you see what temperature it is in here? Huh? I think you should be god damned heating this apartment right about now!”
This Dan Bricklin article has been getting a lot of buzz recently, and with good reason: it’s a wonderful, in-depth account of his Segway experience.
Chuck Palahniuk on memory: “That’s why, the moment I saw Guy Pearce in Memento, I knew finally someone was telling my story. Here was a movie about the predominant art form of our time: Note taking.

Wired: A Top-Secret, One-Of-A-Kind Mac.

Damer popped the lid to reveal the GS’ motherboard. “It’s a classic Woz design,” Damer explained. “Few chips. Lots of slots. Open.”

He gestured to the original Macintosh, the brainchild of Steve Jobs, sitting on a bench nearby. “The Mac is from the same time but is the total opposite,” he said. “Jobs closed it up. You need a special screwdriver to open the case. No slots. Closed and proprietary. There’s the two cultures of Apple right there. One open, one closed.”

Why is this information so hard to find? (My CodeWarrior external-editor string is now c:\progra~1\vim\vim61b\gvim.exe +%line “%file”.)
“Get up, Amy! Get the fuck up, bitch!” I guess the grandparents (the actual tenants) aren’t home this weekend.

More slashdot stories: The LA Times reviews Neon Genesis Evangelion, in time for the full DVD release.
Argh. My diary-submitter has been broken for a couple of days, so none of my posts have been saved. Then again, you can’t reach dsandler.org anyway, so who cares?

So, someone at the office was recently heard making fun of “The Scorpion King” by calling it “The Eye of Argon”. I foolishly asked him, “what’s ‘The Eye of Argon?’” It was then explained to me that a story by that name had been submitted to a sci-fi/fantasy fiction competition in the Bay Area something like ten years ago, and it won the Worst Fiction award that year. It has not ever been submitted again, but it has continued to win the Worst Fiction award every year since. Apparently, they now have contests to see how much of this thing can be read aloud before the reader dies of laughter. It seems to be quite a legendary piece of fiction.

It’s awful. But what’s even more hilarious is this MST3K adaptation of “The Eye of Argon” (adaptation written by a prominent interactive-fiction author). I have to stop reading it — it’s sending me into hysterics!
