Ugh.

I’m wolfing down a turkey sandwich I had to abandon at 1pm (yeah, three hours ago) to rush into a meeting I almost forgot I had. Worse still, it’s a meeting above my pay grade that I was attending in lieu of my manager, so it looked really bad when I came in, a little out of breath, at 1:02.

And since then it’s been one thing after another — hassles getting my new teammate set up on the software, issues with the source control server, dealing with my stupid car — and so I’m just now sitting back down to my sandwich.

It’s warm.

Rhino has just relased the Transformers Season 1 DVD Boxed Set. “… including alternate sequences, outtakes, bumpers, an original script, and more. All episodes have been beautifully restored from original 35mm negatives. Also included are two limited-edition cels of Transformers characters.”
Miriam just brought in Krispy Kremes. I asked her what the occasion was, and she informed me that her rabbi just recently kashered (made kosher) the Mountain View franchise. Happy Kosher Donut Day!
As if ESPP weren’t problematic enough (”here, your personal financial position isn’t strongly enough invested in your employer; invest some more money!”), the IRS will soon start applying payroll taxes to ESPP gains.

Apple releases the eMac. A nice move to get back into the education market, but I also suspect that Apple didn’t want to waste its investment in its 17″ flat-face CRT manufacturing process. The same situation inspired SONY’s eVilla, a flat-face CRT-based internet appliance that crashed and burned hideously.

It seems the eMac has something else in common with the eVilla, as well:

The Economist has a stellar article on modern gerrymandering. (It’s happening right now!)

[09:33] <dsandler> Oh, what a wank!

[09:33] <dsandler> Some dude from a meeting yesterday (in the conference room next to my cubicle) came by and if he could borrow my tape dispenser.

[09:33] <dsandler> He didn’t return it, and I went to the conference room to look, and it’s gone.

[09:33] <Trey> heh

[09:34] <dsandler> I could get another one, but PSI has changed tape from Scotch(tm) to that super-glossyw-amber crap that crusts over after a couple of months.

[09:34] <dsandler> I had one of the last normal-tape rolls.

[09:34] <Trey> LOL

[09:34] etron-home also hates the new tape…

[09:34] <dsandler> OK, this is even weirder:

[09:34] <Trey> dsandler: you either need more or less coffee. The current value just won’t do.

[09:35] <dsandler> I looked more closely in the conference room, and my tape dispenser is there (I know it b of the extra piece of tape wrapped around the base). But they ed the nice Scotch roll with Amber Crap Tape.

[09:35] * dsandler decides that this was a bad week to quit coffee.

[09:35] <Trey> Perhaps they ran out during the meeting?

[09:35] <dsandler> Of my tape.

[09:35] <dsandler> And went and replaced the roll.

[09:36] <dsandler> What the hell kind of meeting uses up a full roll of transparent tape?

[09:36] <Trey> And then didn’t return the dispenser.

[09:36] <dsandler> Some sort of tape orgy?

[09:36] <lbj> There is honor among thieves.

[09:36] <dsandler> Yeah, they were inconsiderate as well as kinky.

[09:36] <lbj> Maybe they ran out of airplane glue.

[09:36] <dsandler> You know, this is a pretty funny rant, no matter what.

[09:37] <Trey> dsandler: the humor comes because it actually bothers you.

[09:37] <dsandler> Yeah, it’s funny because it’s irrationally upsetting.

A coworker suggested the following technique for getting one’s message across: “burn it into the wood of a baseball bat, cover it in ink and make a swinging mimeograph.”

Oh. My. God. I watched so many more of these shows than I ever imagined, or care to admit! [from yesterdayland.com]

[11:07]
<dsandler> Man, where is everyone today? It’s 11AM! [11:07]
<Trey> dsandler: Friday! Friday! [11:07]
<dsandler> I thought friday was for leaving early? [11:08]
<Trey> dsandler: Why leave early when you can optimize it away?

Yow, a two-thousand-line bugfix. (Okay, I had to move some code around so that the linker would be able to keep all the internal code references under 65535 instructions, and moved code contributes prodigiously to the size of the bugfix differences. Whatever.)

Other tidbits   I’m grumpy that OS X 10.1.4 doesn’t actually improve PPP reliability the way it claims to (my iMac still has a modem that’s grossly incompatible with 3Com ISPs) … Erin will probably get a promotion pretty soon (not a new title, but an upgrade in the pay scale of her current role) … it’s pretty solid now that the company will be moving to a new building in late summer … Erin and I have ballet tickets (Giselle) for our anniversary in a few weeks.
