year++

Well, I do think it’s time.

I have enough preliminary material together to start a new comic series, barely related to my old series, captain jim. As soon as I have some more tidbits to share, I’ll set up a site for the new endeavour.

New Year’s resolution? To make sure this new project goes somewhere.

Not quite New Year’s here in Houston. (Good thing Starbuck’s is open late.)

Stupid Graffiti tricks: if you’re sloppy writing “Starbuck’s”, it comes out “Starbuck$”.

Scot Hacker follows up his excellent article on OS X and BeOS.

Joel on how to get things done when you’re only a grunt. Translated, this means “nobody’s going to look after your sanity but you, and there are things you can do to create a little bubble of productivity around yourself.” Here’s a great tip I learned at a previous job:

Come into work late and leave late. Those hours after the rest of the company goes home can be the most productive. Or, if you’re on a team of developers who regularly come in late, get into work at 9 am. You’ll do more work in the two hours before other people come in and start bothering you than you do in the rest of the day.
According to the year-end zeitgeist roundup, Palm is the Web’s #4 brand.
10:44 PM: My idealistic side getting the better of me, I use an “unsubscribe” webform to try to escape a particular high-volume spamlist I seem to have gotten myself onto: hotdeals1@lists.em5000.com. 10:47 PM: I receive a new message from the same list. Bastards.
Erin: “I know that’s their name, but I’ll always think of a high school football team every time someone mentions the ‘Fighting Uruk-hai’.”
Travel fun: I’m on the ground in Houston, but my checked bag is still somewhere in Dallas…

Xerox Wins Case Against Palm, 3Com. “Xerox said it will push for Palm to either to stop making its handheld electronic organizers, which use the handwriting recognition software, or license the technology from Xerox.”

I found this little gem in the BBEdit 6.5.1 release notes:

CButton now special cases kBevelButtonTemplateID, and when running on Mac OS X, will make the bevel buttons have rounded corners. (This prevents you from cutting your tongue when licking them.)

[11:36] <ctate> Noooooooooo! www.adcritic.com is shut down!!!!
[11:42] <todd> Be strong, ctate.

You can change the file format of the screenshot via defaults (’defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat <imageFormat>’, where imageFormat can be JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or PICT). The default is TIFF.
