Hello, world.

…a little blog for a little boy.

First Halloween!

Nathan dressed up as a turtle (Squirt, from Finding Nemo, to be specific), along with his cousin, Daniel. Uncle Marty got them matching costumes before they were even born. The boys didn’t stay in their costumes all that long, though, because they got fussy.

Fortunately, Mom had prepared for just that situation, and so Nathan had a sleeper that said “My First Halloween. Don’t scare me!” Almost as soon as he was in it, he fell asleep on Grandpa Makulski.

Aunt Kelly reminded us the next morning that we had an owl hat to go with the sleeper, so we put that on and took some more pictures.

Adventures

Nathan has been through some serious adventures in the last few weeks. First there was the hurricane, for which we hunkered down at Grandma and Grandpa Makulski’s house. Then, when they had no power for four days after the hurricane, we drove up to Aunt Kelly’s house in Dallas (Grandma and Grandpa wouldn’t get power back for another five days).

But the biggest adventure of all was another hospital stay. Unfortunately, our boy seems to be taking a tour of children’s hospitals in Texas. The doctors couldn’t figure out what had caused his vomiting-and-gray-color episode (accompanied by a temperature of 95.7°; what’s that about?). But he’s fine now. As always, we have photographic proof.

Back at home, Nathan is working on neck control, talking, and being ridiculously cute. No surprises there.

First trip to the zoo

Erin and I have been Houston Zoo members pretty much ever since we moved back to the area. We’ve always loved zoos and aquariums, and for years we imagined what it might be like to bring our little boy or girl along to meet all the animals.

Last week we made our first zoo visit with Nathan.

Expect to see the three of us there with some frequency.

Best and worst buys

Worst $100 spent on The Boy: the Simplicity 3-in-1 Close Sleeper Bassinet. We had already decided weeks ago that it was the worst $100 spent, because he outgrew it within two weeks and it was haunted. Then we learned this weekend that it had been recalled because of two infant deaths. The only upside is that we can return it to Babies-R-Us and get a refund, which is superb since, as I said, we had already deemed it useless and stopped using it.

Best $100 spent on The Boy: the Fisher-Price aquarium cradle swing we bought him about two weeks ago. Man, he loves it. He gets a kick out of merely sitting in the chair watching the fish go around, as you can see from the photo. And besides that, the chair rocks in two different positions, and it has music. He’s a happy, happy boy in his swing.

Back to work

Dan went back to work full-time yesterday, and Nathan definitely noticed the change. He really couldn’t take his eyes off Dan when he came home from work and all through the evening. He seemed to be thinking, “Dad, where were you all day?” I told him just to wait until January when Mom goes back to work full-time, too…

Look-alike contest

Most people stare at their baby wondering whether he looks more like Mom or like Dad. Dan and I consider which famous people Nathan looks like. Today, alone, I got flashes of Vladimir Putin, Phil Collins, and Bruce Willis. In the past, it’s been Kevin Spacey and Alfred Hitchcock. What they all have in common are receding hairlines and jowly faces, like our boy.

The smallest of victories

We spent part of our evening on “tummy time” tonight, and Nathan worked very hard on lifting his head. Final result: Success! He’s now able to lift his head and rotate it completely from one side to the other. This is a one- to two-month skill, according to his pediatrician, which he has mastered at five weeks. So, Nate gets a gold medal in head-raising. Go, Nate!

You bought your baby his first track suit! I’m so proud of you! —Kelly

Dan: It’s fine. I mean, what’s easier to take care of than a sleeping kid? Erin: Two sleeping kids! Dan: AH-ah-ahhh!
