Friends season 9, episode 6
Original air date: November 07, 2002

Phoebe's settling into her relationship with Mike, and she's quite happy about it. In fact, she and Mike have exchanged keys to each other's apartments. And that's about the time that David, her scientist guy who's been in Minsk, shows up on her doorstep. He's in New York for a few days asking for more grant money. She's thrilled to see him and, when he asks, tells him she isn't seeing anyone at the moment.

Rachel and Ross are interviewing nannies, because Rachel has to go back to work in four weeks. They're not having much success - one woman who seems perfect asks, "Do you do random drug testing? If so, I'm going to need a couple days' notice" on her way out the door - until Sandy (Freddie Prinz, Jr.) who's been with the same family for three years and has a degree in child development shows up. Rachel loves him in an instant, because he immediately jumps in to help change Emma's diaper and says that raising a child is the most important thing one can do. Ross scoffs, because he's uncomfortable with the idea of a guy nanny. He says that a male nanny is like "if a woman wanted to be a ... a ..." Rachel indignantly asks, "A what?" To which, Ross can only lamely reply "...king?" Rachel begs him to give Sandy a chance, though, and they hire him.

Monica comes home from work and exults to Chandler that she loves it: the kitchen is huge, the staff is really friendly, and the maitre d' is the funniest guy she's ever met. Chandler feels really threatened, because funny is his "thing," and starts nonchalantly trying to do little comedy routines in front of Monica every time she's around.

Ross and Rachel poll everyone about whether a male nanny is weird. Joey agrees, saying "It's like if a woman wanted to be a ..." Monica challenges him, "A what?!" and Ross says, "Yeah, how is that sentence supposed to end?" Joey thinks about it for a second and comes up with "penis model."

Monica confronts Chandler about his weird behavior, and he reveals to her that he's been feeling insecure about the funny maitre d'. She calms him by saying that the maitre d' told an off-color joke the night before, and so she doesn't think he's so funny anymore. When Chandler walks away, Joey asks if it's true about the off-color joke, and she admits that, no, she just made it up to keep the peace.

Phoebe and David go out, and she realizes she has to tell him about Mike. She does, and they're saying goodbye to each other (with a little kissing) when Mike tries out the key to Phoebe's apartment. He confronts Phoebe and David, but David leaves and Phoebe explains the situation. Mike's uncomfortable, but forgives her. David comes back to tell Mike that if he's ever in Minsk, he should give him a call, and gives Mike his card.

Rachel's getting along swimmingly with Sandy, who plays the recorder for Emma, bakes madeleines, and has homemade handpuppets. Ross puts his foot down, though, and tells Rachel that he would never force her to live with something that made her so uncomfortable. She acquiesces, but tells him that he's responsible for firing Sandy. Sandy's in the middle of teaching Joey some tunes on the recorder, but Ross interrupts and sends Joey home. He fires Sandy, but Sandy asks what he can do better next time. Ross admits that he's uncomfortable with a male nanny, and Sandy engages him in a mini-therapy session about why that might be, coming to the conclusion that it was Ross' dad's pressure on him to be more manly.

Finally, Joey and Sandy have become good friends, with Sandy sharing his puppets with Joey, and Joey thanking him, because he's learning so much from Sandy.
