ad-hoc guest book
I've hacked together something of a guestbook. While I
scramble to
assemble other fun stuff, feel free to say hi and leave a comment or
two.
Or ask a question. Or suggest something. Or something.

- Tue Feb 13 11:13:06 1996: Julie <jchen@goober.mbhs.edu>

here checking out your Capt. Jim stuff...
very impressive, but hey, you never cease to amaze me.
- Wed Feb 14 07:56:37 1996: Michael Elliott <mqe4993@acs.tamu.edu>
- What happened between issue 66 and 67. Did Ellis pull herself up or what?
You could have played that a lot more than you did.
It just seemed weird that she came walking in, in issue 67 and didn't mention
that she almost got killed when the gravity came back on.
Other than that, I love this comic.
Keep 'em rolling.

- Hey, I swung by your page via Alternative Comics.
You have a nice page going here, infact, I stole
myself a little icon to link to my page once I get
it up and running. I'll send you an invite when it
gets up. Good luck with the page, and continue
the great adventures of Captain Jim.

- Thu Jun 20 09:08:33 1996: Eric Schwartz <erics@col.hp.com>
- Hey, just wanted to let you know I enjoy the heck
out of CJ. I read a lot of manga, and while your
drawing style is totally different, I get a sense
that you take a similar approach to your work that
most manga artists do.
One caveat: sometimes, especially when there are scenes
without captions, it's difficult to tell what's going on.
Page 1 of issue 70, f'rinstance. And that's largely a
style thing, I think, so don't go changing things radically
'coz of me. :^)
In short, keep up the great work!
-=Eric

- Tue Aug 13 17:37:19 1996: Roberto L. Vargas <rlvargas@coqui.net>
- I believe that one of the most useful and important things
about the Internet is that people far away like me get a
chance to see work like yours. Thank you for putting a
smile on my face when I needed one.
- Tue Aug 20 07:52:33 1996: dan sandler <dsandler@stardot.com>
- Enjoy the new art and issues! -dan.
- Tue Aug 20 09:02:20 1996: Nick Lindenberg <nlinden@its.uct.ac.za>
- Dammit man, I'v only read stories 56 &
most of 57, and already I am certain
to be back. Have you any idea how frustrating it
is watching panels come down at 0.3 K / second :)
Frustration aside, this was certainly a worthwhile place
to visit - thanks. We'll have to see
if you will make a Neil Gaiman, but it looks
promising.
PS - how about a zipped story archive?
Oh, and the FAQ link mentioned in the Comics section
appears to be broken.
- Fri Aug 23 03:08:19 1996: Phil Somerset <somerset@cpcug.org>
- Love the comic. Have been downloading and printing it since your second or third issue. Very hip incorporation of technology. Sometimes a little choppy in the story line; makes it a little hard to follow the thread. Otherwise, I like it a lot!<
/i>
- Fri Aug 23 11:12:09 1996: nate <ncook@macalstr.edu>
- 71's nice dan... i like the new storyboard
elements--like the dialogue at the end and
the footnoting somewhere amidships.
the HAV (?) was pretty whacky though... hm.
now if i could just get sendmail configured
i'd be having a good day.
- Sat Aug 24 12:37:21 1996: Elaine Hagen <erhagen@earthlink.net>
- Sat Aug 24 16:09:47 1996: Robert Lewis <rlewisjr@metronet.com>

- Sun Aug 25 17:17:24 1996: Chris Craven <cynosure@gnn.com>
- You have a classy hyperbook here!
- Fri Aug 30 07:27:30 1996: Steve Horton <shorton@expert.cc.purdue.edu>
- So! A new issue finally comes out. One complaint: so little happens every issue that it seems disappointing waiting two months for a new issue.
I also have an online comic, follow the link from my web page at: "http://expert.cc.purdue.edu/~shorton/" and please tell me what you think.
As soon as I get to a scanner I can scan in the next few pages.
I've also a question: When are you planning, if ever, to end the series? How far have you written ahead?
- Tue Sep 3 15:32:45 1996: Jason Alderman <jasonald@artwear.com>
- You're art's getting even better Dan; the past three issues have looked like you've had a lot of time to work on them. I liked the reference to Scott McCloud in the latest, #71. I've meant to drop a line, but they keep me pretty busy here at scho
ol.
Keep up the excellent work...

about how this page saved my life, I

What the hell did you do to Jim between 70 and 71? Impressive artwork to be sure, but man.....
-Oh, and have you been reading The Crow graphic novel? Seems like that dream sequence issue bears
some resemblence. Awesome drawings in that one.

- Mon Dec 9 13:34:54 1996: Bob Yee <byee@ual.com>
- Hey Daaaan! These cj pages are really
hard to read, with the blue-on-black text
and all. I know cj is supposed to be
"dark", but this is ridiculous!
- Tue Dec 10 15:37:41 1996: Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu>
- I've no clue what's going on here...but I like it. Now if I'd just get my graphic serial (or whatever) off the ground...*sigh* Well, at least someone's doing it, and doing it nicely indeed.
- Fri Dec 20 11:32:46 1996: John Waupsh <DidacticCP@aol.com or 75263.3646@compuserve.com -if box is full>
- Curious to know if you're interested in producing this mini in "true" comic form. I'm a publisher, DIDACTIC CHOCOLATE PRESS, and have published four issues of PLASTIC SODA (which featured Many many minis) and currently ANUBIS. I'd like to see
the issues in hardcopy format, preferably, if you're interested, so we can review them. If interested, please email me at either of the above addresses. Thank you,

- Excellent!!! - Keep going...
- Sat Jan 18 07:14:18 1997: Michael deLeon <mdeleon@ix.netcom.com>
- I was discussing the idea of putting comic books online with my brother, Patrick deLeon, and he was to busy arguing against me to really think about it.
It's good to see someone is to busy doing to to argue against it.
Your artwork is good. I did a comic strip for "The Daily Texan" (where Burke Brethed, Sam Hurt, Chris Ware, and Robert Rodriguez all got their start) at UT for a while, and your does a great job of lloking goood and telling the story without being overtly realistic. Scott McCloud would be proud.
I actually found your comic by accident ... I did a search on "James Avery" looking for hewlery for my fiancee.
I'll be back ...

- I just wanted to say that I've been reading Captain Jim everyday
for the last few weeks. I LOVE IT! The art is so simple, it works
so well. I myself is an artist and I have to say that Captain Jim
some of the best non-inked art I ever seen. One question comes to
mind though, where are issues 1 and up. You seem to start in the
middle. Anyway, I have to go, I only have limited time on the 'Net
before I have to go.
Congrats on a winner,
b.

- Dan! What's stardot.com? Anyways, I'm really glad to see that you've stuck by CJ even though I'm sure the boys at Rice are keeping you busy with academics.
Well, was there ever a doubt? CJ looks amazing as usual. But I should be finishing my paper for Poetry class, as well as preparing for the exam which is in a few hours.
Later Dan. Btw- you're taller than me now aren't you? Boy I rue the days when I used to make fun of your height. Well, I don't know if you are or not. I'm 5'6.something". So superficial eh?
- Fri Jun 13 13:11:39 1997: Daniel Achterman <achtermn@princeton.edu>
- As a fan who found your page near the middle of his senior year in high school and just finished his second year of college, I would like nothing better than to see Jim continue. But as a comic creator myself, I know it's hard to stick with a single idea to it's finish. Best of luck. If you decide to ditch it, fine. Just let us know.
- Cheers

but I'd like you to know that I've been
following Captain Jim since you were
still going to Montgomery-Blair.
I have printed out all of the issues
and have you bookmarked at my Web page
(cpcug.org/user/somerset).
I hope you can get back into it and
finish up the threads.
I particularly like the way you
integrate technology into the story
without letting it take over.
Thanks for doing it.

- I read the series till no. 62 or so...
I find it peculiar that nobody suspected
the King's minister of regicide...
I haven't gone through the rest of the
series yet, but I thought that it might
be interesting if everybody suspected
Jake of selling out the Academy to the
alien invaders... y'know, lure the guards
outside so the invaders can pick 'em off.
Anyway, I enjoyed the story and the artwork
so far. I'm sure it'll get even better
in the later issues. Maybe your latest issue
has color. Dunno, haven't seen it yet.
Keep up the good work.

- Very good, if confusing. I feel like I'm reading the first page of each chapter of a book, then skipping to the next. But the fact that I want the gaps filled in says something positive about the work. Truthfully, I’m impressed that you can do this at all. KUtGW

So what's the story with Captain Jim?
Lost in limbo? The art was nearing
publication-quality by issue 71.
And yes, Chapter 4 of FREEFALL: NO FATE
will be on-line by August. Promise.

- Hey, great site. I've been to quite a few on-line comics pages but none come close to yours for sofistication and ease of use.
I too am trying to create a similar site using my own characters and stories. I hope you don't mind me using your site as a model.
I' just starting out with computer and web page design. I use a Mac G3 Mini Tower along with Adobe Pagemill.
My html code writing skills are about as good as my typing, hunt and peck. Again,a really great site. I'm telling all
my friends and anyone who'll listen about it. Good luck with the new site. Can't wait to see it.

Miss ya, boy!! Be good to yourself.
- Thu Sep 17 05:57:13 1998: David Brennan <cyber@fan.net.au>
- Started reading CJ in early 1996 whenI founf id by accident. THe art is great and the story is very engaging if a little confusing at times. I was hoping you had added some more issues since I was here last(mid-1997) but it looks like you are planning some new stuff. Its refeshing to see something that is done completely in pencil and I the watercolour covers are a good contrast. As for publishing it hardcopy, all I can say is you have a larger audience (read: global)via the Net then in hardcopy and people can get it for free. Plus the site design is excellent. I reckon stick to the Net distribution. All told I really enjoy this comic and look forward to some new issues.
Cheers, David

- Stumbled across an old ref to your mbhs site and decided to look you up on the web. Took a few minutes to find your "new" digs, but it was worth it. Best of luck on your impending graduation, and if you drop me a line next time you're up Austin-ways, I'd happily buy ya a beer in return for the couple hours of entertainment you've given me. - First stumbled upon Captain Jim way back in 1995 or so. Thought it was pretty damn cool that you're bringing Jim back and freshening him up. Can't wait to see the new stuff! Oh, and by the way, big ups for propping public radio! I'm a DJ at KTPR-FM, and I know how it is to be thankless... Good luck on the new stuff! :)

- Nice.
- Sat Jul 10 23:18:22 1999: WD McArdle <grell_@hotmail.com>
- Very impressive stuff, quite nice.
If I may be so bold, the line drawing reminds me of Waterston (Calvin/Hobbes) without the cleanup, after being filtered through Jean Girard Mobius's viewpoint. I really appreciate the way you don't handhold the audience through complex explanations if what goes on. (although this seems more common a phenom on the DIY comics on the net)
I hope to see more of your work as time permits, whenever that may be.
Oh, I found the page through "Talespinner's Top of the Web" http://www.talespinner.com/totw/
